Canadian Immigration

Canada has been selected as one of the finest places to live in the world. Comparatively speaking, Canadians enjoy many employment and business opportunities which require greater numbers of skilled workers and business people to meet the demand.

According to official government forecasts, more than 1 million immigrants will enter Canada within the next few years. Many categories make up this number. Provided below is an overview of the recent changes made by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration, affecting eligibility in various categories of immigration.

The Independent Immigrant

The system used to award points under the Vocational Preparation and Experience categories has, as of May 1st, 1997, been significantly changed. The selection system is presently based on an occupational index, providing new vocational classifications. It is now more difficult to qualify an applicant for certain occupations, based on his or her minimal educational and vocational qualifications.

Investors

New regulations, which are expected to come into force on December 31, 1997 will raise the minimum investment under the Investor Programme by $100,000 (Cdn). Investments in Government approved investment programmes will begin at $350,000. Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia will require minimal investments of $450,000, and all funds will still need to be locked in for a 5 year period.

Family Class

Canadian citizens or permanent residents sponsoring members of their immediate families (not including spouses and minor children) must now demonstrate that they have met the requisite income requirements, obtained from Canadian sources over the past 12 month period. The minimal income requirements have also been increased.
